INPE Preparing to Host GLP

Wednesday, November 30, 2011

Organized and hosted by the future IPO of GLP at INPE in Brazil, the Land Use Transitions in South America workshop linked scientists from social and natural sciences to exchange their views on one of the world's most diverse and dynamic regions in the globe. Details of the workshop, including the presentations, are available here: http://www.inpe.br/wsglp2011/

During three days in Ilhabela (Nov. 17-19), the participants could listen and discuss about four main topics related to the sustainable future of the region: Institutional Arrangements and Governance; Vulnerability of Land Use and Food Security; Environmental Services Provision; and Modelling and Data Provision & Analysis. The outcomes of the event will be available in the next GLP Newsletter, and also in their website www.globallandproject.org.

According to the organizers, the GLP workshop also served as a kick off of the GLP IPO transition to Brazil. Hosting the IPO at INPE, in São José dos Campos, was made possible through the personal commitment of Dr. Gilberto Câmara, GLP SSC member from 2006-2011 and Director of INPE.

With this move, the new IPO will be located both in a country of the highest importance and interest for land change research, as well as in an emerging major player in the global science community. This will also be the first IPO to be located in a country of the global south.

The Global Land Project (GLP) is a jointly funded core project of the International Geosphere-Biosphere (IGBP) and the International Human Dimensions Programme on Global Environmental Change (IHDP). GLP became operational in September 2006 with the establishment of the International Project Office (IPO) in Copenhagen, Denmark, funded by the University of Copenhagen. It currently operates with two Nodal Offices (Sapporo, Japan; and Beijing, China). From January 2012, the IPO will be relocated in São José dos Campos, Brazil, becoming to be funded and hosted by INPE.
